Perry is the child of Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). The character Jackie Harris was played by her mother in each of her two appearances on Roseanne. Perry was forbidden to begin acting in front of her family until she reached adulthood, as they feared the stress it would create. Perry claims she never wanted to become an actor during high school, but she decided to begin acting as a social activity at Northwestern University when she switched to the university from Boston University. Perry was a graduate of Boston University, relocated to New York in search of acting roles on television. She landed small parts on shows such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Then, homelessness brought her back to California for theater roles. Perry performed with her mom as part of The Other Place at Broadway, back in 2013. She appeared in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Christie and Kevin McKidd. This was presented in the West Los Angeles' Odyssey Theatre Ensemble. Perry appeared in nine episodes of the ABC drama The Family in 2016. Perry was also featured in the role of a political thriller Scandal with her father. In the same year, the actress was selected to play a younger model of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again playing a young model of the mother's role. The character was picked via auditions the fact that she had a deep relationship with the show.
